Every time I saw Dash, without fail, he would hug me so hard that he’d lift me off my feet and swing me around. He wasn’t a big dude by any means, but his love for his friends was strong enough to lift anyone off their feet. People have their own memories of Dash Snow, but anyone who really knew him, knew that he was just a total fucking sweetheart.
I remember once I interviewed him for iD. I ended up sitting in his apartment for hours, chain smoking, looking through records and books. We called a bunch of people over and it just kind of turned into an impromptu party. He was showing me his art pieces and his sculptures in such an earnest and excited way, like a kid showing off his drawings in a coloring book. Instead of a Crayola coloring box it was pictures of Manson and corrupt cops covered in his own jizz, and some weird oceanic doll house with little crabs. There was also an old couch with a potted plant coming out of it. Honestly, they were fucking awesome.
Some of my favorite memories of Dash are from when I was in my early twenties. We all just fucking partied at The Hole. And when I’d get home and get into bed, I’d get a call from Dan and Dash who wanted to come over and keep going. And so we would, and that too was fucking awesome. Dash will be honored and remembered mostly by the people who were closest with him; his girlfriend Jade, Ben, Dan, Nico, Kunle, Ryan, Leo, Dill, Alanna… there are tons, older friends that knew him since he was just a little punk wrecking havoc on the Upper East Side, and newer ones like me, who saw him as the poster child for the days in the early 2000’s. Before the towers fell, Ryan and Dan’s apartment was the epicenter of good times, and Dash was a permanent fixture. I have tons of pictures, stickers, and relics of Dash floating around my apartment, but if you live in New York City, you’ll be able to find Dash on almost every street corner. Anytime you see a SACE tag. Keep on the lookout before they’re all gone. It’s a travesty what the disease of addiction can do and who it will take. I chose to remember Dash not as a diseased person, but as someone who just radiated pure, awesome, A-fucking-plus energy. Isn’t there a picture of him somewhere riding a horse down the Bowery? Can someone find that please?
