On the page for the Billy Bragg radio show (where Bragg claims Malcom McLaren made Bow Wow Wow steal “See Jungle” note for note) I saw that you were looking for the Dark City Sisters and Flying Jazz Queens record. Here it is: This blog posted the record, scroll down for the Flying Jazz Queens one.
Here’s the download link.
Just figured I’d send it your way if you were still looking to post a song off of it.
Cheers, Corey Cryer
Corey,
Just listened to the whole thing and OF COURSE Bragg was wrong. I knew it. I’m no fan of Malcom but saying “See Jungle” was stolen by Africans is such the thing you want to be true so bad you make it so. There is not one song on this album that sounds remotely like “See Jungle.”

Dear Street Carnage,
I’m afraid it’s you that is wrong. Billy Bragg just confused the name of the bands, it’s Mahotella Queens that “See Jungle” was “taken” from. Here’s the song.
Thanks to another blog that I stumbled upon trying to find out what Billy Bragg was talking about.
All the concern of theft is really gay tho because all artists do it, duh, and it’s the basis of all art/music/culture everywhere. Sucks when you’re someone like Evie Sands but it’s annoying to hear how ornery bands get whenever anyone borrows the smallest bit from their music, like that whole Rubinoos v. Avril Lavigne thing.
Love,
Corey
Dearest Corey,
Joe Satriani VS Coldplay is boring and For Nerds Only but this Bow Wow Wow thing is off the plagiarism chains. I was wrong, mad wrong. Sorry Billy Bragg.
Sincerely,
Gavin Miles McInnes I
PS Rockers NYC coincidentally has a great post about Bow Wow Wow today.
PeePeeS I recently saw them here in New York with the dude from No Doubt on drums. Sorry but they were fucking amazing.

Am I the only person that finds it a little offensive Malcom would steal an African song verbatim but change the words to “See Jungle” and “Go ape crazy”?

This isn’t just referencing the damn song, they basically copied it note for note.
What if I started a blog called Avenue Destruction and just posted the same shit you did? That’s not how culture works. That’s how douchebaggery works.

Frank, I seriously don’t care. My point was made more in reference to the blog that I found the Mahotella Queens song from. If you view culture from the capitalist definition of property, then yes that is how culture works. Look at the amount of copying that went on in religion (Judaism and Christianity stole various concepts from Zoroastrianism: messiah from virgin birth, good vs. evil, laws regarding proper behavior, etc.). Also look at how artists from the beginning took various techniques and themes from other artists; Picasso even once famously stated, “Bad artists borrow, great artists steal”(or something to that effect). Did the Carter Family ever reimburse the original musicians they got their songs from? Doubt it. What about all the covers Bob Dylan and the whole folk scene did? That was how itinerant bards operated, hear a song you like, change it a bit, then play it elsewhere for cash. I’m not saying Malcolm wasn’t a scam artist, it was fucked up that he didn’t credit the originals, but the overzealous application of that sentiment is retarded. Malcolm does deserve some credit for popularizing South African music. Look to the examples I cited originally to understand my point. Look as well to Keith Richards/Mick Jagger who famously didn’t credit various musicians who helped them write their songs. Also this blog post http://ignorantarmies.blogspot.com/2007/08/race-and-taste.html illustrates my point near the end (I “stole” most of my argument from him). I left my email in, so sbctv can confirm this is the real Corey.
ps I still like McLaren and Bow Wow Wow

Avenue Destruction is actually a much cooler name

Avenue Erections has the benefit of being (kind of) alliterative as well.
By the way, I’m going to use Paint to make crude copies of the Street Boners, and then just post your caption underneath.
