DEAR STREET CARNAGE: POLITICS OF ECONOMICS
I guess you’re a comedy site and have no intention of discussing the immanent financial apocalypse we find ourselves in, but you are also one of the few places in hipsterdom that dares to give another take on things.
Why not discuss what nobody else will say about all this, that it comes from the idea that Hispanics must own homes? Some say this is racist and they point out the stats on foreclosures basically reflects the ethnic diversity of our country but those stats are almost ten years old. Everything changed radically since then. Total mortgage lending dollars to Hispanics (new home purchases and refinancing) septupled or more from 1999 to 2006 and quintupled for blacks. The increase for the more prudent Asians was smaller because they didn’t jump on board the subprime express, and for whites least of all. In 2005-2007, half of all subprime dollars went to minorities. Get it?
This whole thing began when politicians (both Democrats and Republicans) decided Hispanics needed homes. First the Clinton administration decided to enforce affirmative action when it came to loaning. Here’s a clip of Cuomo admitting it proudly.
Then Karl Rove decided to take the idea and shoot it through the roof. He figured home-owning Hispanics would be more likely to vote Republican (I have no idea why) so he demanded the minimum down payment banks should require for a mortgage is… nothing. The banks jumped on it. By pretending to care about minorities they could throw way more money out there. Here’s Steve Sailer again mocking WaMu for caring more about helping the poor than pushing profits
Now, you can’t make public policy “All Mexicans Get Houses” so they just said “Poor People Get Houses” and every other race dove in. This is why so many other people, including whites, have been pulled into this affirmative action mess.
To be clear, I am not mad at the Mexicans. If someone offered me a deal I couldn’t afford I’d take it. There have been minority loans before that said they would charge 0% interest to the borrowees. Those people would be dumb not to take it, stick it in the bank, take the 3% the banks gave, and pay it back when necessary – keeping the profits for themselves. Worse than some irresponsible minorites are the banks who leapt on this legislation and built pyramid schemes with it.
However, the biggest assholes, in all this, are the politicians who started it. They meddled in the free market, enforced some kind of communist ideal, and now we’re being taxed to the hilt to justify it. Isn’t that what ended Russia?
The funny thing about this bailout is it assumes this will be the last time. The real estate bubble was just one in a series of huge lies we all fell for. Remember the dot com boom? That was going to make us all rich. Then it was real estate. Then that popped too. Next will be the green movement. There will always be snake oil salesmen to tell us a hard day’s work is not the best way to pay your bills. Don’t fall for it again. Please.

Libertarianism is a shortsighted, narrow minded excuse for people to use the “free market” to justify their greed and stinginess. Guess what genius? There is no such thing as a pure free market and we’re not really a capitalistic society. Our economy (like every other world economy) is a combination of a systems and we employ both capitalist and socialist economic policy depending on our country’s fiscal needs. At some points in our history we lean closer to one end of the spectrum more than others. But the idea that capitalism is inherently American is wrong. Democracy, the form of government, is the foundation yadayada but economic policy is flexible.
You fail to recognize the interconnected nature of our economy. You don’t have to be a bleeding heart altruist to see that your neighbor’s welfare should be in your interest. Why? Because if he fails, so do you. We’re really not free agents. I get so fucking sick of hearing that “why should I have to use MY tax dollars to fund THOSE people” attitude. The interconnectivity is apparent on a macro level as well with globalism, as you see the domino effect of our crises on world markets.
You sound like a fucking hoover parrot. The market does not magically fix itself and yes, it does need regulation at times. FDR’s plan, the New Deal was a very interventionist, very government funded, SOCIALIST policy that pulled our economy out of the fucking “free market limited government” induced mess that we know as the Great Depression.

I’m a libertarian too but I think the gov’t still has to intervene. It should secure borders. It should enforce tariffs. It should not let banks get away with pyramid schemes. And it should provide a police force. That’s about it though.

Loomis, the problem that I have with your argument and the original author’s argument is the proportion of the blame you assign to minorities and minority lending in general. It’s a dangerous mix of ideology and (hate to pull the “card” out) racism that forms the premise of your arguments and not the facts. I mean, I get it. Whenever there is a crisis, it’s human nature to point fingers. But aside from the faulty economics (i hate to get so serious on a comedy site so just read http://www.newsweek.com/id/162789 or some other shit) it’s the way you establish a “them” and an “us.”
The overzealous spirit of lending to ALL and cutting interest rates for the corporate end was the culprit. Lending to minorities and poor people in general was only a small factor. It’s bizarre to me how the author is so determined to stick the blame on minorities. For ex: the author acknowledges that poor people of all races took out these subprime loans, but then reasons that it’s only because the government couldn’t outright say they wanted it to be only for certain minority groups. Um, give me some evidence because that makes no fucking sense. Poor whites outweigh poor minorities BY FAR in this country so the government would definitely be more careful about who they targeted. I mean, have you seen the populations of red states? Then the worst part of all, the author concludes that these poor whites were “pulled into this affirmative action mess.” What the hell? Where did you cook that up? So the poor whites were tricked into taking out the unethical loans, that were available to poor people in general (but secretly intended for those damn minorities)? BULLSHIT! And interesting use of affirmative action. I don’t think you know what it means. It means “to promote the rights or progress of other disadvantaged persons.” So providing loans to poor people in general is affirmative action.

OK. It’s not a metaphor, it’s a literal entity called the Federal Reserve. A coterie of unforgivably wealthy financiers concocted the idea on Jekyll Island off Georgia’s coast in 1910. Then, using their pull over politicians, they forced it through Congress, which passed the Federal Reserve Act in 1913. These are all documented historical events, not paranoid right-wing fantasies.
The most brilliant part of their entire scheme was to call it “Federal,” even though it is not part of the US government. It is an association of private bankers that operates as a cartel. That is well-documented, too.
They print a bunch of paper money. Since the US went off the Gold Standard in 1971, there is absolutely nothing backing up the value of this paper money. It gets problematic because they expect “interest” back on this worthless paper money, which requires them to keep printing and printing and printing and printing more worthless paper money. This is what causes perpetual inflation. Prices don’t ever really “go up”; the value of dollars keeps going down. Compare US inflation rates before and after the Federal Reserve Act. You’ll poop your pants.
Every American citizen, regardless of color, is forced to pay the Federal Reserve “interest” on this worthless paper money. Currently, every American citizen owes about 35K on the “national debt.” They have no choice but to be enslaved within that system; otherwise, it’s jail.
You used a very loaded word: “conspiracy.” It’s typically tossed AT people who offer evidence of governmental wrongdoing BY people who really don’t have a good comeback. One is presumed to be a lunatic if they believe that governmental and financial forces might prefer acting in their own interests rather than ours. A rudimentary understanding of history and power organisms reveals that every government, everywhere, at every point in history, has pulled strings in order to remain in power. That means for each mexican who defaults on their $150,000 home loan, there were 40,000 traders betting on the default with obscene amounts of money changing hands.

Conversely, celebrating “black history” is not really celebrating the history of the black race, but that of Black Americans. Black Americans can’t really trace back to original countries (plus they are usually mixed with more than African) so in the US “Black” American culture has become synonymous with the black race.

It was the rich who deliberately fomented racial animosity in the labor market. It’s only when you have a jackass who blabs about “white people” as if they’ve always been one solid block hellbent on oppressing nonwhites that you can’t logistically have a class war. Those are the ones who define the situation strictly in racial terms.
It’s only when you have deluded people who think only whites are capable of racial wrongdoing or misguided ethnic pride…instead of the truth, which is that we’re all human and capable of being assholes…that you can’t really sit down and talk about class war.
I’m aware there were double standards in this country for centuries. But instead of truly correcting that, they just switched the double standard around. I didn’t get the impression that the article that started this bitchfest was trying to pin the blame entirely on minorities. In fact, he goes out of his way to say that he WASN’T saying that. Since it’s unlikely that anybody was forced at gunpoint to buy into this scam, the blame has to fall primarily on the people who bit on this rotten apple. 2. People who were complete fucking retards when it comes to the concept of interest and credit, who don’t know and don’t care, who also assumed that the mighty government would take care of them when the shit hit the fan.
3. People who never had the intention of making good on their debts, unfazed with the prospect of just strolling away and letting somebody else deal with their shit.
So they were targeting minorities. Who, in this pussified society, would dare stand between a protected species and their piece of the American pie? That would be racist, right? And there’s the reason the bankers and their cronies in government pushed for these practices; no one would dare to challenge it, and it would have the secondary benefit of throwing fuel on the fire with regards to race relations in the U S of A.
Any time something shitty happens, some Marxist has to point fingers at the “capitalists” or the “republicans” or whatever happens to come up on their commie magic eight ball. What they can’t stand to admit is that people largely dig their own graves. That doesn’t stop them from squealing for more intervention, more government, and less freedom for folks to do as they wilt. Go look up the Glass-Steagall Act and follow the trail from there. This shit was planned this way, and irresponsible dumbasses gave the bankers the rope they would later hang them with.
