The era of music videos on TV is ending, but in this age of flailing record sales and cheap technology, fans are taking up the art form with just their digital cameras, computers, and YouTube accounts. These kids are demonstrating that you don’t need a million dollars (remember Kanye’s “Touch the Sky” versus Justice’s “We are Your Friends” at the European MTV awards?) or even be a part of the band to make a good music video. Now it won’t be long before there’s a YouTube Music Video Award Show and drunk Kanye can steal someone’s internet limelight.
Here are a few examples of such fan music videos:
1. LCD Soundsytem “New York I Love You”
Pretty straight forward music video visualizing the song’s lyrics
—
2. Mogwai “The Sun Smells Too Loud”
Made with footage of another music video spliced and edited
—
3. A Silver Mt. Zion “We Are All Trying a Little Too Hard”
One for the intellectual art school kids
—
4. Smashing Pumpkins “Mayonnaise”
Footage take from “Over the Edge” spliced and edited
—
5. Santogold “Shove It”
Created using over 2,000 photographs stitched together
—
6. Diplo “Florida”
Created using over 3,000 photographs stitched together
—
7. The Music Tapes “All Tomorrow’s Parties (Velvet Underground cover)”
Shot on 16mm film

“flailing record sales”
yes, those record sales are thrashing around violently, all right.
suggestion: learn a word’s meaning before trying to use it.
