In Patrick Brown’s The Butterfly Mind we learn about real victims of oppression like the demonstrators in Tiananmen Square who lost their lives simply standing up for what they believe in. We’re very lucky to blah blah blah blah blah blah.
I had to say goodbye to this book last night because a voice kept popping into my head saying, “Fuck them.”

Okay, what if only 6 million of his murders were bad. That’s only 12%. Can you at least get as mad as a Jew? Nope. Well then, sorry, but go fuck yourself.
And I know times are tough in the dark continent but Jesus. Can’t you just rise up and kill the guy? When America decided Britain was getting too oppressive they kicked them out. 50,000 people lost their lives but at least they got the job done. They couldn’t get on a boat and claim refugee status. There was no such thing. Why do we allow refugees anyway? I mean, you can’t blame a guy for grabbing his family and getting on a plane if someone offers to look after them but that’s on an individual basis. I’m talking about entire groups of people, policies. Why is there a policy that allows refugees to come over? The law should say, “I know it sucks that guys are chopping your arms off but hide in a tree and jump down on the main guy when he comes by and bite his fucking eyes out or some shit.” Or better still, shoot him. If we really wanted to help Africa out we’d just ship them a thousand crates of guns tomorrow. Everyone gets one. Now let’s see the warlords glide through down cutting off pregnant women’s nostrils and fucking the hole. You can’t rape a 0.38.
Speaking of which, why the fuck is Mugabe still alive? Can you not shoot that guy from a grassy knoll or something? Come on Africa. A hamburger is 15 million dollars. Anyway, alls what I’m saying is “Arm Your Desires.” We’re allowed to be bummed about job loss and other shit like that because, if you think of us as a people, as Westerners, we earned it. It’s not like some magical force made us rich and the third world poor and we have to thank our lucky stars it isn’t the other way around. You make your own lucky stars.

I don’t see how life in Africa (or China or Russia) was all that great 100, 200, 300, 400, 500, 1000, etc years ago. People starved and lived under despotic/monarchical rule. Just like today. Even when there was no global marketplace for the capitalists to take advantage of their labor. Their rulers would just be like, “fuck you, be my slave and feed me grapes.” And they keep doing it. They seem to like the idea of having a king for life in the 2nd/3rd world (Venezuela most recently).
Except now, it’s under the guise of making life better for the proles by killing off/kicking out the elites in any given shithole-country. The very people with the brains and resources to make the country better.
Much of the Western World has left this shitty existence behind. Why? It has less to do with exploitation and more to do with a superior system of education and governance, whereby the citizens (the proles) don’t have to put up with its own government’s bullshit. It has to do with utilizing modern technology to do work that used to be done by children and slaves. And (of course) it has to do with going to war when you think another government has gone too far in fucking over another country (or its own people).
It especially has to do with the masses being suspicious of any given individual or party that makes outlandish promises about taking them to the promised land.
Of course if you don’t like what I just wrote, you always have the option of playing armchair revolutionary.

The thing with Africa is this. After being colonized for 500 years, Africa never got to fight the wars of empire and nation building that pretty much defined Europe since the fall of the Roman Empire. Jared Diamond has it partly right, (trade routes, ideas, etc), but a nation that had its borders drawn on a cocktail napkin by a departing British ambassador is not going to be solvent in the 50 years most of the continent has been independent. You’ll have clowns like Mugabe, just the same as Denmark was once ruled by Ragnar the Horrible or some such guy. Give it time, a couple crates of AK’s and the good will prevail.

I often make this argument but I never go near Africa for precisely the reason you see above: People start bitching about colonialism and talking about Jared Taylor. The best way to discuss it is to focus on China. Why feel bad for the oppressive society they created? Blow shit up. How do you make a viable nation-state without centuries of warfare to carve them out? 200 years ago, there was no such thing as either Italy or Germany. yaddidimean? Technology has nothing to do with it. You don’t need stealth bombers to fight the nig-nogs next door. African nations haven’t carved out nation-states because they never had a chance to fight the wars that create them.

I guess 50 felons on a chaingang, each carrying their own pickaxe, outnumber 2-3 guards with shotguns. But the shotgun > pickaxe in one on one combat. Never mind that at best one or two felons could get shot at in the event of an inmate revolt before the chaingang picked the guards to death. Power comes from fear, that fear of personal injury or fatality that makes the underclass fear and thus respect power. What can be done to that individual, despite knowing they couldn’t do that to everyone if everyone revolted at the same time. Because they’re are individually scared, the entire whole is afraid.

The article is more poorly written than usual, and it shows in the comments. There is an underlying theme of individual responsibility, but be careful: as soon as we start using words like ‘deserve’, we slip into that most Western trait of self-righteousness. After all, it would be easy to make the argument that because of a whole whack of out of control individual self-interests, the West currently “deserves” our own financial catastrophe. Perhaps we do.
Africa is fucked, full stop. And don’t blame the colonials. Who brought roads and infrastructure there? Nigeria wasn’t exactly doing a great job on its own beforehand.
China can handle its own. It won’t be a superpower, mostly because superpowers won’t exist anymore. The world is far too integrated for such a disparity of nations to ever exist again. Or even for nations to be that important anymore.
But come on Gavin, ship over crates of guns as a solution? You can do better than that.

Let’s just keep Africa out of it if that’s easier. I think all the author is trying to say is: we should stop pretending that other cultures are simply “different” and ours is “responsible for anything bad they encounter.” How about, “We are simply the greatest culture alive today”? When I was a kid and people would tell me to report if someone was touching me or to fight back if someone was trying to kidnap me I was like, “Doye.”
Now as an adult, when people tell me they were abused as a kid, I’m ask them if they were threatened with death if they told and none of them were. Most of them just kind of half experimented – half were embarrassed or cool with it. I know it sounds harsh, but people make victims of themselves.

Yes, the West does not have a monopoly on self-righteousness; we are, however, the only ones who seem incapable of realizing it. When George W. Bush invades Iraq for “Freedom,” he honestly believes he’s doing something that is universally good. The rest of the world sees it for what it is: a colonial acquisition. When China talks about the glories of the Middle Kingdom, it doesn’t try to fool itself into thinking it can convince other countries that its dominance is somehow a manifestation of universal human rights. This is the basic argument at work in Huntington’s “Clash of the Civilizations”.
My point about self-interest was not about “misery”, or whatever other poorly constructed argument you were trying to make, but rather about the decadence of American values, and what is being perceived as the ultimate failure of free markets, at least by those outside the scope of the Western media.

I’m saying that the American values of “not giving a shit” that are cited in the article above may be what are responsible for it. Yes America may have been founded on non-conformity and acting out as individuals. Those are traits that help when you’re settling and constructing a country from scratch, but that doesn’t mean that they’re some kind of transcendent recipe for success.
Don’t you get this? It’s the same shit repeating itself. Did you know Islam, for its time, was actually ADVANCING the rights of women? It was only when its adherents started to think that it was the religion itself was the reason for its success, instead of a host of historical contingencies (power vacuum left by collapse of the Roman empire, petty-mindedness of European feudal system) that it began to fail. The Nazis performed like superhuman beings in battle until they actually started believing that nothing could stop them (Hitler telling his troops in fall 1942 not to give up any ground for more secure defensive positions); until they started believing their own bullshit.
Decadence. When the values that once made a culture great are now responsible for its own demise. “Not giving a shit” is what brought Americans to settle the West and win World Wars; it’s also what caused a group of businessmen at Enron to defraud thousands of shareholders of their lifesavings.
