Greek anarchists must be stoked falling oil prices have made Molotov cocktails affordable again as they burn the country to the ground. While much of the reporting places young anarchists at the center of the trouble there’s also significant support from working people over the country’s financial straits. The whole lot of them love to protest. For the record, real anarchy is not about nihilism or the absence of rules, but rather an anti-authoritarianism based on mutual aid. A bit of a hippie pipe bomb dream to be sure but with cheap gas available, the Greek kids are having their say. Unfortunately, all this pot-stirring will have little coherent message in the end as issues blur into spats of hair pulling, baton smashing and smoldering shops. Democracy was born in Greece and it could very well die there as well.

    Now all the young people all over Europe are protesting, because European countries’ governments are basically the epitome of mismanagement and terrible policies. Whoops, Europe, young people have no jobs, everyone’s dying, the birthrate is tiny, the immigrants are hostile and un-assimilated, the industries and infrastructure are in shambles and pretty soon the entire continent will pretty much be irrelevant. But you guys have socialized healthcare! Yay! Take that, America!

    @if i were a goy…

    joe lieberman, i’d rather take jobless young people, “everyone dying,” tiny birthrate, hostile and un-assimilated immigrants, industries and infrastructure in shambles with socialized healthcare than jobless young people, “everyone dying,” tiny birthrate, hostile and un-assimilated immigrants, industries and infrastructure in shambles without socialized medicine, like we have in America.

    the huge wave of rioting in Europe is pretty recent. their systems traditionally have a higher degree of socialism than the American one, but most countries over there currently have center-right parties in power. brown’s a conservative, sarkozy’s a conservative, berlusconi’s a conservative, merkel’s a conservative, putin’s a conservative… in Italy they literally have nazis running the country; just read the recent news on how they’re cutting funding for social services and blaming all the problems on the immigrants. the policies toward socio-economic equality and the poor are what’s driving people to riot.

  17. If I were a goy... Says:

    No, Western Europe especially is becoming more conservative because they realized how bad they’ve f’ed themselves. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t consider myself a conservative, I just don’t like the way Europeans snipe about the US without realize how shitty their countries are. By the way, our jobless rates for young people are WAAAAAYYY lower than Europes, everyone isn’t dying, our birthrate is higher, our industries are taking a beating from the recession but are still in much better shape, as is our infrastructure, and our immigrant population is wayyyy less hostile, way more educated, way more well-off and assimilated than Europe’s, so there’s that. Come on, there’s no better country in the world to be a legal immigrant in than the US. Also, we’re still relevant as far as world affairs go, and we still make decisions. Suck it, Europe. You’re a bunch of whining failures.

    Now protests are spreading to Italy, Spain and Denmark and the Greek diplomatic missions in Istanbul and even yes in your precious New York City have been vandalized. Please Saudi Arabia raise the price of oil so these little shits can’t afford a litter of gas otherwise before long all our curry shops and telephone card kiosks will be in flames. Damnable Olympic torch.

  21. Beef Says:

    the cops killed a 15 year old kid in cold blood. thats how it all started. and its not gonna end any time soon, athens is a battlefield.

  24. youth movement queef Says:

    I met some young Greek progressives this summer. They knew fuck all about issues of any consequence, but they certainly were hot-blooded and beautiful. Which is good if you want to implement full-scale anarchy because you don’t like a 51% conservative majority in your gubmint and hope your actions will force the President to step down. Democracy really doesn’t mean shit to them, but I’m not too sure what they care about. Marxism, as a political ethos, doesn’t have the avant-garde appeal it used to. It’s an idea that’s fucking 160 years old. So as sexy, ill-educated, mindless young “liberals,” where do you go from there? I guess Molotov cocktails could be a good way of staying ahead of the curve politically. What better way to be at the vanguard than to bomb the fucking pigs, and wreck shop all across your country?
    Anyway, could you imagine what Europe would be like if they had the same access to firearms as Americans?

  25. dan Says:

    boogers

  26. john zerzan Says:

    I would guess they are a mix of Situationist,Insurrectionary, and green/primitivist anarchism thats what all the rage with the kids these days. It all reminds me of the whole Crimethinc./WTO/portland thing that happened a few years ago. If europeans had guns this wouldn’t happen because the cops would use really force like they do here and everyone would be scared shitless of them.

  27. Billy Zane Says:

    I moved to the States from Europe when I was 16. I’ve been to a few soccer riots before that (also in the Balkans) and lemme tell ya, the cops use “really force.” There’s still less gun crime than here.
