You say that the site “holds a certain moral obligation to it’s readers…”, but can you explain to me why this potential obligation wouldn’t be almost continually broken by each new post? Take a couple examples from the past two weeks: there was a mocking article about a guy who committed suicide on webcam, a mocking article about a woman who injected her face with cooking oil, a mocking article about a drunk guy stumbling around in Times Square. At the very least I think the post about the guy who killed himself, and all of the replies to it, is on a level of offensiveness not all that far from the video of Sam shooting up; there’s of course greater physical risk in Sam’s video, and the potential for spurring on people and whatever else would be said, but I think the worldview isn’t terribly different. And that’s also why it’s so strange to see Gavin and all the others suddenly getting serious and emotional when they’re forced to confront the video–it makes me want to ask whether they could ever accept the idea of putting things into another gear and making a few vicious cracks about those same dead friends.
