I found something in common about people who were outspokenly pro-war or anti-war and weren’t in the military: They are all condescending pricks who talk out of their asses. I’m not only tired of the liberal bullshit calling me cannon fodder and a baby killer behind my back, but I’m also tired of these Republican morons who call me a hero and say they always thought about joining — but of course they had “more important” priorities like going to college or whateverthefuck they want to do with their lives.

There’s a saying that goes around in the Marine Corps.: “America is not at war; America is at the mall.” The military is at war. America is at a Japanther show. Any talk or indignation about the occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan is all talk. It is all fluff political debate. People are simply comforted by the fact all they have done is pay taxes for the war effort, even though in reality they haven’t paid for all of it yet.

Even though I have my own opinions about American Foreign Policy that are NOT peace loving or more altruistic than the average neocon, I know enough about Americans. I know enough to know most Americans do not believe in this war, whether they are Republican or Democrat. You doubt me? If you have Republican parents and you are not in the military already, tell them you are considering joining the military, especially the Army or Marines. They will do their best to talk you out of it. They will turn into a hippie right before your eyes. Since they know deep down inside that YOUR life isn’t worth THEIR cause. My father was a pretty conservative guy and we had a real bitter argument about me joining the Marines right after high school. Next thing you know he was someone who would vitriolically call Bush a “redneck son-of-a-bitch” and say that Cheney’s strong tie with Haliburton is excuse enough to throw them out of Office. This was a guy that wanted Bush to be re-elected in ‘04.

It is funny how people act and think when they have real cards stacked against them. They are not willing to make the sacrifice and I am sure my personal situation mirrored those of others who enlisted. Even though the main reason anybody should join the military is to serve a patriotic cause, I knew a lot of young men and women who joined because of economic necessity. Then there are the small group of assholes who joined because they get to say they shot somebody. George W. Bush has two daughters who were fit and ripe for military service but they spent most of those years schmoozing with the entertainment elite with the likes of Vincent Gallo while young men were being shot at or had their balls blown off trying to take over Baghdad or an Afghan village. What the hell did they do themselves for the war effort? They used their blood money to party.

A few years ago, Charles Rangel lead a group of Democrats proposing to bring back conscription. There was a HUGE backlash against this. But he did not want to bring the draft back because he wanted to win any political favors. It would have been political suicide if he really did. He proposed it to prove a point. He showed that most Americans weren’t willing to fight or at least let their children fight this grand war on terror. He did not want to see the military simply being made up by the people of the far Right, the poor, and the criminal. Unfortunately, it didn’t go anywhere. Most Americans didn’t want it and the power elites of this country didn’t want it simply to perpetuate these wars.

The World War II generation was called “The Greatest Generation” for a reason. America was in the Great Depression and when Pearl Harbor occurred, America went to war and emerged victorious and the greatest superpower of the 20th Century. This country became great not because they fought a war but because they made true sacrifice. During the war, older people in the streets would shake their heads in disgust if they saw a young man not visibly in the military. People donated their CARS to the war effort to make sure Americans overseas had tin for supplies. People had a real hardcore attitude about it then. Life on the home front was dedicated to the war effort. America was at war. It wasn’t simply putting a yellow ribbon bumper sticker on the back of its SUV.

Of course this “attitude” would rot away in future wars. Finally America gave up the Vietnam war and it was also the greatest anti-war movement this country ever had. Most Americans weren’t willing to sacrifice their lives for a common cause. I would not blame anyone for that. I have my own reasons why I am for certain wars but this country was run on a democracy and if most of this country is not willing to fight a war, we should NOT fight it then. But unfortunately the anti-war movement coincided with the anti-military movement as well. The worst thing Nixon ever did was to end the draft after the war. He wanted to appease the Left and kill off the anti-war movement by making the military an all volunteer force and made the burden of any war put on those who CHOSE such things for themselves. We see these problems being manifested today.

Obama didn’t win the Presidency because he was black. He won because the Mothers of America voted him in. They didn’t wanna see any of their sons and daughters going overseas to possibly die. People thought this guy was legit and he would be the President of peace everyone was hoping he would be. Wrong. We still occupy Iraq while he simply moved everyone from the previous Iraq troop surge by Bush out to Afghanistan. Who exactly was he appeasing by doing this? It certainly is not the the Republicans because those guys are gonna jump down his throat over anything. It certainly isn’t the people who actually voted him in. He was appeasing the power elite. The military-industrial complex. The bankers. The oil industrialists. That’s fine with me. But for those who are so dissatisfied or those who think the cause is so righteous, why aren’t you willing to be out there in the shit with me?

I see the futility in all of this. I don’t think the draft will ever come back but the worst thing to happen to the anti-war movement might have been the end of conscription. It made America complacent about war. Most people do not have their heads in what is going on in Iraq and Afghanistan and they don’t give a fuck. If we had a true universal draft which forced every young man or woman, rich or poor, to be put in the fore front of every foreign policy debacle the leaders of this country get us into, we would see some serious CHANGE in our politics. We would have political parties completely dedicated to staying out of conflict.

So put your money where your mouth is and ditch political bumper stickers and re-think this “democracy” we have in this country. I am telling you this up front. You really want to see an end to war based on lies you might want to consider BRINGING BACK THE DRAFT.

    yeah bullshit propaganda and nostalgia

“People had a real hardcore attitude about it then.”

yeah they did in Italy russia and germany too. it was totalitarianism and we had it here under FDR. Once people realized how dumb this was americans invented libertarianism ,conservatism, and hippy ism and the like and people slowly started to get a clue.

” I am telling you this up front. You really want to see an end to war based on lies you might want to consider BRINGING BACK THE DRAFT.”

yeah go ahead and draft me, I’ll join the other side hahaha

… or you could just not elect such idiotic, egotistical presidents. ie: George W. Bush. People would be more motivated to fight for “the cause” if it meant something more than controlling the worlds supply of oil. World War II had 2 possible outcomes, fight for your freedom or become apart of a corrupt German nation. People didn’t have a choice. Common sense tells people this war isn’t quite the same.

  8. the worthless generation Says:

Don’t get in a tizzy now. You lazy goons probably aren’t draft-able anyway. It’d be a nice statistic.. The percentage of service aged civilians that the military would deem physically unfit for service.

So Yeah, draft the hipsters, mall-hippies, punks, computer goons, trust fund man-children and crusties. hahahahahahahahhaha.

Man, Coke Ennyday, you are SO in-your-face and irreverent! We were just protecting one town in Poland!

    Fucking stupid.

This article is interesting and it is a pretty good idea, but after watching videos (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lUPMjC9mq5Y&feature=fvw) of the tea party in D.C., the frightening possibilities of conscription seem to not be worth it.

Imagine the US rallied behind someone like George Bush again with conscription in effect. It’s one thing to say we wouldn’t want to be in the current war nearly a decade after it began, but morale and support for the cause of war at the beginning was ridiculous. I believe if conscription was in effect while the US was in a state of vulnerability again, like after 9/11, more people than you would expect would support their kids fighting against the “war on terror”.

  32. Taeil Says:

11 Alpha, I’ve had this argument thrown at me before by fellow Marines and my whole point is this. Although most of the people who join the military are good guys there are quite a few who joined for the WRONG reasons and I’m talking about the goon idiots who did it to prove their manhood or just totally brainwashed in the Republican mantra. Those guys reflect the entire military in a bad way and it just creates a stereotype in who the military are comprised of. I’m not saying I’m a shining example of a stellar Jarhead myself, but I personally don’t see a draft hampering performance in the ranks. I can see an opposite effect weeding out the jackasses.

There are competent people who would be in the military who would not have thought about joining otherwise cause they were probably the guys who were level headed enough to pursue school or work in the civilian world instead. In reality most people don’t LIKE or WANT the work they have to do in college or really WANT or LIKE what they do in their regular jobs but that doesn’t stop people in performing their best. If ALL Americans were put in the military as a REQUIREMENT outside of jail and a better future for their careers you will see good people come in and oust the bad apples. I guarantee it.

  34. Taeil Says:

And consider this, we are not gonna see a perpetual end to these problems in the Middle East. Generals are already calling this former war on terror as “The Long War.”

The fact that we still have our manpower stretched out with Iraq and Afghanistan and have our hands tied behind our backs with Iran and Pakistan kinda shows how we are stagnant in theater. One way or another we have to stay out there with more commitments required through the use of a draft to actually stabilize the Middle East.

If we wanted to pursue real efforts in democracy and freedom for these people in the these regions we would be bombing the fuck out of un-democratic countries including Saudi Arabia, securing, occupying and rebuilding these nations. That would require a lot more American lives than the American people are willing to sacrifice. But at least our boys will be back home. So here we are now with things looking shaky in the future.

It doesn’t matter. I even stated in the original post there’s a futility in wishing the draft to come back. I just see this country still suffering through bad foreign policy only for things to bite us in the ass even harder but by that point we’ll be worried about the war at home than the war out there.

    exactly.

taeil, please explain how implementing the draft would just ‘weed out the jackasses,’ or how you came to the conclusion that ‘If ALL Americans were put in the military as a REQUIREMENT outside of jail and a better future for their careers you will see good people come in and oust the bad apples. I guarantee it.’

maybe you have an explanation for these theories (and i’m all for hearing the rationale behind them), but this post just seems incredibly naive. i usually enjoy your posts because they’re (typically) pretty realistic.

anyway, at a certain point in the future (like when the chinese come calling) debt will be a big enough disincentive to go to war. but at that point they’ll probably be telling us to bend over. maybe at that point you’ll get your draft and america coming together to go off and fight another great war and people turning their suvs into guns or whatever.

  42. Beej Says:

I’d rather NOT join the military and shut up about it, than join and go ON AND ON AND ON AND ON AND ON AND ON AND ON AND ON AND ON AND ON about it forever on the internet to anyone who will listen about all this tough guy shit about “being in the military” (to a bunch of hipster-ironic-moustache-williamsburgers or whoever it is you’re supposedly railing against but at the same time seem so constantly desperate to want to impress) comparing your ‘War’ to World War II, when a) statistically its like a grain of sand to a mountain, and b) and least they had the dignity to shut the fuck up about it.
    Next up, book deal right?

Not to disrespect your experience, but did you join that thing just so you could talk shit about it later on?

  43. Taeil Says:

If I wanted to impress “ironic-moustache-hipster-douchebags” I would’ve started a band like Wavves.

Secondly, I can’t help but notice how much the liberal art crowd go ON and ON about something they don’t know anything about what we deal with out there. And you know it’s because of people like YOU who would’ve been those lame boomers who pussied out of serving in Vietnam and gladly saw the draft end only to grow old and vote in politicians who wouldn’t think twice going to war over special interests.

I wrote this as an end all be all statement about Iraq & Afghanistan. I think I made my point clear enough. If you want to bring an end to the occupation of Iraq & Afghanistan and prevent future wars like these you’d have to bring back a universal draft.

  44. Hunk Golden Says:

No waste of time war will matter if the dollar tanks and it will if we keep spending like this. All the while real unemployment is 17.5%. What are we doing? Maybe America will realize this when there’s no mall to go to.

Well let’s see how the draft originally worked. If you weren’t willing to cooperate in serving this country in anyway your ass was sent to jail. Better yet, if you were so “anti-government” how about you also get any financial aid cut off from any government institution altogether let alone a job. The rest can runaway to Canada for all I care.

For those who are conscientious objectors in terms of religious/political reasons they can be simply trained as medics. Their asses are still gonna be out in the warzone but being in the rear will be a good place for ‘em.

Again our military are full of bureaucrats/careerists in the ranks and most of them don’t like the idea of a draft either. I think it’s because the higher ups don’t want to compete with others for promotion if anything. But honestly we are also simply undermanned. There’s too many Chiefs and not enough Indians for the military to perform at its best. That’s why a draft would be ideal and most of the draftees are gonna be decent guys like most of the cross section of American society, instead of some of the certain fuck ups recruiters sign up.

  46. Taeil Says:

*No waste of time war will matter if the dollar tanks and it will if we keep spending like this. All the while real unemployment is 17.5%. What are we doing? Maybe America will realize this when there’s no mall to go to.*

I’d wish I had a crystal ball on where this country is gonna go when something like hyper-stagflation happened but hey our best example will be Russia after the fall of the Soviet Union… It’s sure really awesome out there…

  47. ElGalloGigante Says:

Bringing back the draft, in a universal capacity, won’t alleviate any of the problems you speak of. Rich, influential Americans will see their kids through guaranteed loop-holes that will come with such legislation and at worst, to some cush post out of harm’s way, like say, Minot, ND. Meanwhile, middle-class American children will bolster the current “jackasses” you deal with now out on the front lines instead of entering the private sector or going off to college like originally planned.

I come from a military family and my father served in the military because he felt it would give him the best opportunity to make sure his then 3 year-old wouldn’t have to. He about lost his shit when I first decided to pursue an appointment to the USAFA, even though being an Academy grad is hardly anything to shake your head at, but I’m glad he steered me to a great four-year university and I quite enjoy the life it’s helped me acquire.

Plus, the military is going in a direction that will streamline its branches and reduce its overall cost, so bringing back the draft will completely fuck that initiative.

  48. Coke Ennyday Says:

” didn’t read any of the other comments, so somebody might have said this but… Lots of countries have mandatory military service for 1 year out of high school. It’s a great idea. If you are a complete pussy, you can get out of it(by going to uni in the States for example).”

I know right? the people who pay your salary are constantly trying to tell you to stop gloating about the fact that your boss steals that money form us against our will and pays you with it and stuff like that.

how about stop pretending that we actually WANT your services or that you are doing anything but making us

    1. alot LESS safe
    2. alot MORE poor and
    3. a hell of alot more hated in the world?

then maybe we can have a real conversation instead of having these canadians/ euro comms line up to sniff your jock

  49. dai one Says:

    ^lol^

  50. yo Says:

I kind of agree with this theory, but only as a means to ending the wars. Once the troops are back you end the draft. Then you put in place some kind of mandatory public service with a choice: Military, Education, Poverty relief, FEMA, whatever. Just something to make people get up off there asses and get in contact with other Americans that they usually wouldn’t have contact with. Then maybe it would be a lot harder for people to fuck eachother over in this country with no conscience. Then maybe you would have people doing shit other than lurking around malls like total tools.

  51. Taeil Says:

*Bringing back the draft, in a universal capacity, won’t alleviate any of the problems you speak of. Again I’m hoping when there is conscription Americans will still have something called freedom of speech and we still have a large middle/lower class base in this country which will turn against the war itself and AGAIN like I said they will form political parties dedicated to staying out of conflict. And for those rich kids I guess they will pay up getting out of it out the ass and they can kiss goodbye having any political careers. People will know they pussied out of service, but you know know you have to thank the boomers electing turds like Bush and Clinton to office.

I’d rather have people riot out in the streets than have them not do it because there is no draft in place. But you know what happened? People decided to drop the draft instead of have people like YOUR DAD deal with that shit when it comes to going to war.

By the way, what is this “streamlining” you speak of the military? Last time I checked the military wants to increase funding for each respective branch and the US Marine Corps itself wants to increase our numbers. Again, it shows the problems of a bureaucratic military that won’t be willing to collapse as one branch or anything for the common good because generals play to their own interests. And this is another good thing why there should be a draft as most of society should be able experience what the military really is like instead of getting what they know out of Hollywood and liberal textbooks.

  52. Taeil Says:

The only thing close to streamlining the military has gotten was when the government contracted folks like Blackwater. And you know how well that turned out.

  53. Nathan Says:

I don’t really have the time to read this right now. Does he mention anything about Black Flag or punk rock?

  54. ElGalloGigante Says:

    * I’d rather have people riot out in the streets than have them not do it because there is no draft in place. But you know what happened? People decided to drop the draft instead of have people like YOUR DAD deal with that shit when it comes to going to war.

That’s my problem with your argument, NO ONE IS GOING TO RIOT IN ANY STREETS over this shit. Nobody cares, because the struggling families are already filling up the military’s ranks and rich kids with “political aspirations” are already serving in bullshit capacities like in the Texas Air National Guard.

If this is really just boiling down to you not wanting to hear Hawks or Doves or whoever-the-fuck go on and on with their opinions, then I think you’re crazy to think that bringing back the draft with quiet that chatter.

As for the streamlining bit, I’m going off of fuzzy memory, but I thought there was going to be a shift towards a more part-time/Reserve heavy force to keep the growing benefits cost down in the future.

  55. Taeil Says:

“That’s my problem with your argument, NO ONE IS GOING TO RIOT IN ANY STREETS over this shit. Nobody cares, because the struggling families are already filling up the military’s ranks and rich kids with “political aspirations” are already serving in bullshit capacities like in the Texas Air National Guard.”

Well if you were to implement the draft I think re-organizing the military would be in order as well. But again, people would rather carry on with this war but still have OTHER kids be forced to fight it. By the way, let me use some REAL stats against your argument. A little over 2% of men and women in this country available for military service are actually serving in the military. This number could be and SHOULD BE doubled or tripled or quadrupled to win a war effectively in the Middle East. It’s the only way to actually stamp out Al Queda/fundamentalist sects and bring about actual stabilization in the region.

Enlistment slowly rose mainly due to the economy in recent years. Our government spends so much money subsidizing businesses throughout this country it is ridiculous and this includes financing universities who still charge loads of money to students. We can use all this wasted money on recruiting and supporting farms and banks that fail bringing back conscription.

Our government subsidizes so much money into the economy our unemployment rate shouldn’t even be close to as LOW as the 10% we have right now. If we were to end government spending in terms of how much we put into privatized industry unemployment would be up to 20% or higher. Bankers out in Wall Street should be out in the streets right now. That problem itself will lead most people to enlist and get incredibly resentful and despondent over the war.

But I don’t see any of this really happening and things just seem more and more fucked.

  56. Coke Ennyday Says:

Again, the goal of this thing, which will never happen in a million years, is to end wars. How about we just don’t have wars? AND not have the draft?

the fact that it is politically easier to have wars than to not have them is our problem. To me, that says that the government is on too long a leash and spending is not considered part of our equation in the way it should.

So bringing back the draft could help somewhat to get people thinking on those lines, but if the govt remains as powerful and well funded as it is, that power and $$ will tend to float around and come out some other horrible place, like another bubble of some kind. the money that would have been spent on wars will be quadrupled in unmanned drones, aid to despised dictatorships, etc.
