It’s become impossible to beat ‘em so you might as well join ‘em, the 90s are back! “Loser,” the grunge-based revival night at Bowery Electric here in Manhattan has attracted the likes of Chloe Sevigny, David Cross, Amber Tamblyn, and Tim (of Tim & Eric). That means it’s a big deal you fucking assholes.

Street Carnage’s own Lesley Arfin took over this entire show and chose every track which felt weird to us because we’re control freaks so we stuck three at the end. Here’s how it went…
Gray Matter “I am the Walrus”
Bratmobile “Cool Schmool”
Green Day “Paper Lanterns”
There’s a way better Gray Matter song called “Walk the Line” where they’re like “Baby baby so devine turning water into wine” de neh neh neh n’neh but this is Lesley’s time to shine so who are we to fuck around? Check here to see her lip sync to Bratmobile.
Also, we thought some guys from Operation Ivy may have been in Green Day and such a thought is untrue. They were just buds. Operation Ivy’s last show was at the same time and place as Green Day’s first show and Green Day still cover “Knowledge” (“All I know is that I don’t know…”) but that’s about it. Rancid is the band with the Op Ivy members in it.
Porno for Pyros “Pets”
Melvins “Lizzy”
Seaweed “Card Tricks”
UB40 “Girl I Wanna Make you Sweat”
Veruca Salt “Volcano Girls”
The Flaming Lips “She Don’t use Jelly”
It was hard letting UB40 into the room but part of this show was telling the masses what the masses request during 90s nights. They fucking love that shitty song. This is the number one rule of DJing: People don’t want to be educated. It’s great that you spent all day tinkering around in iTunes but these people actually work for a living and they came out with their friends to relax. That means they want The Beastie Boys, Oasis, “Waiting Room,” Diggable Planets, Wu Tang, Sonic Youth, Soundgarden and even fuggin’ Nirvana (“Negative Creep” though not “Teen Spirit”)
The Apples in Stereo “Energy”
Blur “Charmless Man”
Heavenly “P.U.N.K. Girl”
During this interlude it is suggested someone in Heavenly died. I did some research and yes, it is so. The drummer (who was also the singer’s brother) offed himself in 1996 when their last album was about to come out. This disbanded the most seminal British twee band there ever was and the fact that such cute music led to death is really fucking creepy.
Old Dirty Bastard “Shimmy Shimmy Ya”
Paperboy “Do the Diddy”
Brandy & Monica “The Boy is Mine”

Here’s a post from when I did Loser.
And here’s three 90s songs I like…

This just makes me think of skateboarding —
Heath Kirchart’s song in Transworld Anthology – Archers Of Loaf – Wrong (first song played)
Geoff Rowley’s song in Flip Sorry – Gray Matter – I Am The Walrus (last song played)
Both legendary skate parts.

switch that first and last song ordeal. I feel the need to correct myself because I am embarrassed someone might out me as illiterate over the internet otherwise.
08.01.08 at 3:34 pm
So is all this “revival” shit like the final semen stain in the underpants of your youth?
08.01.08 at 3:37 pm
PS UB40 != INNER CIRCLE
08.01.08 at 5:17 pm
terrible analogy by the way Vane$$a, you’re probably not very funny.
08.01.08 at 5:21 pm
are people going to this party? i don’t mean that sarcastically, i really want to know . . . because if there’s people there – especially cute people – i’ll totally go.
08.01.08 at 5:23 pm
oh ps i could really give a fuck if quasi-celebs are there. i just want to have fun.
08.01.08 at 5:26 pm
Not to be too much of a stickler for details or anything, but that Apples in Stereo song came out last year, which makes it decidedly not “90s” … and the band is from Denver, so I’m not sure that “Brit pop” is an appropriate classification for them.
08.01.08 at 5:27 pm
the 90’s were fun (i’m 40 and have been living in seattle for the past 19 years) but too much of the music was not. besides, revival nights are so tired someone should do a revival night-themed revival night.
on another note, gavin has become fat.
08.01.08 at 7:06 pm
Leslie has a “Germs burn”
08.01.08 at 7:35 pm
hey winner, fat is what happens when you have kids. You might not know this if you are 40 and live in Seattle (gay)
08.01.08 at 7:47 pm
seriously, seaweed – I was just talking about how this band was one of my teenage staples.
and son’s right winner – being 40 and living in Seattle is gay. maybe you should go teach english over seas as well.
08.01.08 at 8:45 pm
no one has answered whether or not this party is really any good.
sorry but when you have to be awake on friday morning it takes more planning than hearing people bitch about how fat or gay or seattle they are.
you all should stop trying to be cooler than each other.
08.02.08 at 5:36 am
ps maybe i should take the silence as an inadvertent admission that in fact, no one is going (except quasi-celebs who are friends w/ the djs), and thus not worth going out of one’s way for?
08.02.08 at 5:39 am
jesus chill out, this isn’t a chatroom, most people on the east coast were asleep at FIVE THIRTY in the morning and are probably still are.

New Yorker’s are not the only ones who’re having fun:
http://dopo.aaronvb.com/thumbs?i=72157606129078676
Apparently the blog-o-sphere is making the world a lot smaller and tiny fun things are happening all over now a days…even in tourist saturated Hawaii…
And who needs a reason to go out?!?! That’s pathetic…just get the fuhgh out …who cares who’s there/not there?!?!? That’s some of the lamest reasoning for staying in at home ever. You make the night/party what ever you want of it.
If question is indicative of who lives in NYC now I’m glad I left.
08.02.08 at 5:42 pm
lesley arfin,
i would be more than happy to service you and then never call you again. i’m 22, disease-free, and have good personal hygiene. i will pay my own way to nyc, and may even buy you dinner if you play your cards correctly. please get back to me for further details.
sincerely,
yowza

“Girl I wanna make you sweat” is Inner Circle (not UB40) and I think the song is called “”Sweat (a la la la la long)”.
08.03.08 at 1:44 pm
really?
djing with a computer?
really?
08.03.08 at 10:10 pm
i was really fucking depressed in the 90’s
08.04.08 at 3:39 am
I’m really fucking depressed now.
08.04.08 at 8:56 am
“really?
djing with a computer?
really?”
yeah because i really want to see someone scratch it up to porno for pyros.
hey danny tanaglia,i think they’ll be alright with someone picking songs from their computer for fun.
i’m pretty sure it’s just people drinking and listening to songs they like.
chill out captain dj.

question: To answer your question, we went last Thursday and it was dead. Albeit, we got there at 3:30 am, so we didn’t expect super-crowds, but with half an hour until last call, we did hope some party remained. Alas, no. We walked in to find the bartender dj’ing “Sunshine Superman” by Donovan (if 60’s were 90’s, eh?) to three of his pals. They seemed into it.
08.04.08 at 11:04 am
90s revival you say? The 90s were about techno. Not bland indie, you silly New Yorkers.
I will never get Guided by Voices, tatoos, why grown men are into skateboarding, or why you all think it’s cool to dumb everything down and talk like cheerleaders on ritalin. In fact, New York needs to pay attention to something else than New York.
08.06.08 at 7:54 am
the snuff song was in some thrasher vid i think

if 2000-2010 is the decade of reviving the 80s and 90s, what culture will we have to revive in 2010-2020? will dance clubs have “revival revival” nights? or are we just going recess endlessly til the dawn of time rather than define our own culture?
