I haven’t seen a single episode of Generation Kill but I got to read the book in Iraq and it was passed around by most of the platoon. I enjoyed the beginning because it describes the Marines of the Force Recon unit who have different personalities and social backgrounds having the common bond of simply being Marines. This mirrored my own situation there as I was surrounded by guys complete planets away from my social circle. The rest of it is just really generic war story crap that’s been done before.

Actually, you know what? All of Generation Kill and the slew of military books I’ve read and war movies I watched while I was in country was violence being used as pornography. We certainly didn’t get our rocks off in Iraq with girls and there weren’t fire fights happening everyday so it’s really more about being horny and wanting to hurt someone. You make up for it with porn and action movies with people dying or cars getting blown to bits. I watched alot of flicks like HEAT and just generic fucked up shit like Hostel, A Clockwork Orange, and KIDS. It just seemed like everybody was in the mood for the dark side out there.

Don’t get me wrong, it wasn’t soooo bad. I had Jenna Jameson to keep me company. So I did kind of get laid.

being planets away from everyone and horny and wanting to hurt someone is a terrible feeling. As BC says: “ah feel your pain.” at least you can drink, though, right?

Why would you want to hurt someone? oh…because your gunny told you to. If we had spent a fraction of the war buget on setting up an infrastructure & a relatively symbyotic trade agreement in Iraq (Afghanistan) that we have on our own private genocide then our grandchildren wouldn’t have to be concerned with the same bunch of suicidal Muslim assholes that we are dealing with now. An education and a capitalism (not a democracy) would have stopped their diseased thinking much faster than an invasion. The USA has never attacked a country with a McDonalds.

This country is great because of a lifestyle we all enjoy, our military is grossly exploited to serve that end. And every single one of them signed up for it. The Military in peace time is a glorified social welfare system. Now that the worst presidency in the history of America has fiscal interests abroad, they complain about earning their pay check.

Being blood thirsty is not ok. Killing is murder even if you wear a uniform. If they really wanted to “defend” a country, they would have done it by starting a family, a business, a life worth living…

Did anyone just noticed the guy just called me a Nazi? Like I’m pretty sure he isn’t in the military and read a lot of books about US foreign policy that ranges from the far left in concern of US foreign policy but I like the way he calls the Iraq occupation a genocide. As if we are killing people left and right out there. I doubt he’s been anywhere close to Iraq.

I’m pretty sure he never lived and shared a single room (let alone FIFTY other guys under one roof) with anyone for over two months so he doesn’t understand the feeling of wanting to hurt someone. Maybe because he is a spoiled rich pampered bitch. But you know I really don’t want this thread to become a retarded political discussion which was something that the Iraq Report wanted to stay away from.

By the way, we had Marines enter Haiti not too long ago. They’re got a Mickey D’s.

it’s my feeling, that, we should only attack and invade countries that hav a rotten ronnie’s; and leave the pakistanis and iranians alone, just to prove taeil’s point

Fans of Evan Wright’s Generation Kill will be happy to learn that he has a new book called Hella Nation. The new book contains writing he did while embedded with a similar unit in Afghanistan. Kirkus Reviews calls the book “Vivid confirmation of the arrival of a major chronicler of those who live on or beyond the margins of the American mainstream.” Don’t miss Hella Nation, on shelves April 7th.
