Fifty years ago today an unsuccessful uprising resulted in the exile of the Dalai Lama and the permanent fucking of Tibet. The heavy handed tactics of the Chinese has since spawned an army of Tibetan partisans, clear-minded Buddhists hoping to reinstall His Holiness and simultaneously free up Shangri-la for bikram yoga studios and organic yak butter tea bars. Unfortunately, the Chinese army is a mother-fucker immune to the power of Free Tibet stickers on Volvos or the promise of enlightenment at 13000 feet.
Last year was the worst rioting in decades so today the apparatchiks of Beijing are marshaling tens of thousands of their non god-fearing paramilitary goons into the region to make sure kids don’t put up banners or wave a single Tibetan flag. And it can’t be overstated that the Chinese are not above killing kids since the country has made a national pastime out of culling baby girls. In other Chinese secret police news, phones have been tapped, the Internet has been blocked, and cellular communications have been disrupted so people can’t send out text messages. Sorry neither Twitter nor foreigners are allowed to travel to Tibetan areas.
The problem with having such a long history is that you have a lot of anniversaries and for the Chinese hard-liners it looks be a busy holiday season: April marks the 10th anniversary of the major protests by the Falun Gong; the 90th anniversary of the May 4 movement is this year; the 20th anniversary of the crackdown at Tiananmen Square is in June; and in October comes the 60th anniversary of the creation of the People’s Republic of China. Mark your calendars and prepare for the cultural revolution.

Evil Buddhism. Christianity, a perversion of the One True Insect God, at least only suggests that a single messiah figure died and came back to life. That’s fair. That’s equitable. One man of divine origin absorbs the sins and evils of the world. I am that man. I am not Jesus. But the Insect God speaks to me in dreams. It occurs to me that I know nothing about the Insect God. I simply accept it because it seems to want to help me, and because it does so without demands. Is that changing? Does it send me bad energy about Suzie because it is a jealous Insect God? Does it love me? Can it love? Have I been lead astray?
I am afraid, and I do not handle fear very well. My sense of certainty is shaken, and it is for this very reason that I’ve avoided being certain about anything other than my own ability to resist the Dalai Lama. So what about Buddhism? The prime evil of Buddhism is its belief in reincarnation and karma. In case you haven’t heard, reincarnation means that you come back again and again and again on a wheel of pain that breaks your bones and mends them repeatedly. Karma is the debt you gain by doing bad things in order to survive in the hellish, never-ending nightmare that we all experience over and over and over (see ‘reincarnation’). What this means in practice is that Buddhist monks are the ultimate loan sharks, lending you karma at ridiculous interest rates, knowing full well that you’ll never be able to pay the vig. How else can you explain it? It’s such self-supporting bullshit, after all, and it helps support power structures the way that all religions do. I mean, the Dalai Lama is attacking me and TRYING. TO. STEAL. MY. THOUGHTS. Is this karma? Did I do something bad in a former life? And, if so, does the Dalai Lama know about it? Is punishing me part of his karma? As the Greatest Buddhist Monk on Earth, shouldn’t he be aware of his karma, and shouldn’t he be able to escape it? Is he an agent of karma, or is he using it as a facile excuse to fuck with my mind for his evil, demented pleasure? If I go out and kill a child, is it that child’s karma? What if I want to kill a child but get hit by a truck before I have a chance to? Is that karma? What if I aim a telescopic rifle at a schoolyard full of children, get the shakes because I drank too much last night, and end up shooting the Dalai Lama by accident? Is that karma?

There are open buddhist temples and practicing monks all over china, as well as muslim mosques and christian churches. The Tibetans were poverty stricken peasants that were once a part of the Chinese empire. China reclaimed Tibet as part of the PRC built roads, schools, put in electricity running water etc. The Dalai Lama got kicked out but seems to live a pretty nice lifestyle considering his oath of poverty and lack of homeland. Meanwhile the Tibetan monks seem to do just fine with their pretty traditions and cute kids in backpacks. If the Dalai Lama and some hollywood dick bags would shut up there wouldn’t be so much for China to be mad about.

There’s various Tibetans with no affiliation with the Buddhists angry at the Chinese occupation (although most Tibetans indeed dude idolize that bullshit). They fight through a nationalistic bent. Just like the Palestinians and the IRA. Most of the members are of predominantly in a single religion but their aims clearly want to establish a nation with its own identity and borders.
Yeah I guess the Dalai Lama might be as full of shit as the Pope, but the man no way wants to bring back a feudal society back into Tibet and somehow cut economic/state/infrastructure ties with the People’s Republic entirely. In fact, he’s been one of the most MODERATE spokes person of the Tibetan independence movement.
There’s a movement in Tibet (from a younger generation) much more hard lined and radical in trying to get China out of Tibet. Most of those kids definitely do not see eye to eye with the Dalai Lama nor really care much for the Buddhist faith.
The Lama even stated himself he sees the benefits and modernization China brought to Tibet, but he doesn’t like the fact China is trying to eradicate Tibetan culture entirely. That’s what the Chinese are ultimately doing to Tibet.
They force Tibetans to learn Chinese and abandon their own language, while creating schools and brainwashing more and more kids to their way of life and culture and as the Chinese hope for the Tibetans to forget their own history and simply know theirs.
What’s really funny is all the (leftist) PRC apologists, who dismiss Tibetan sovereignty for being petty third world members of society that are being “uplifted” by the Chinese version of imperialism all the while thinking the American occupation in Iraq is the most Nazi thing in the planet. Goes to show how much their logic works out.
