NPR is fun if you’re doing the dishes and you want to laugh at rich, naïve baby boomers but does anybody listen to the radio anymore? It never even works properly. Satellite radio is more reliable but there’s something about it that’s not right. It feels like it was programmed by a robot and they have no idea what the next song is going to be. Same with those radio stations that come built into your iTunes. The only radio that feels like real radio and actually works is internet radio. Here’s our top six stations you need to like as much as we do.

SBTVC FM
Our radio show is obviously the best thing in the world because you get to hear our impeccable taste in music AND laugh at our stupifyingly witty repartee. We only do a show a week though so you’re going to have to move on if you want all your waking moments filled with ear candy.

WFMU
Sorry to put such a “doye” in this list. Americans have been enjoying this station since 1958 and it’s been Rolling Stone’s “Best Radio Station in America” about 100 times but most of us Canadians have never heard of it so there. The best thing about this station is it’s the only one on this list that tells you what song you’re listening to right in your iTunes (although it only does that about half the time). That means you can have Frostwire open as you listen and go steal whatever song tickles your fancy. All the other stations listed here (including ours) require going back and forth to the website and scrolling down to figure out what you’re listening to. It would be nice if this station went off on less weirdo tangents and laid off the ambient Japanese noise music so we could get some new bands we’ve never heard before.

Last FM
This has a Netflix kind of thing where it goes, “If you like this you might also like this.” You can make your own playlists or listen to someone else’s. Our favorites are Amy Kellner and that chick who does monchacha.com.

NYU FM
New York University may get on your nerves when you’re trying to walk around the East Village on a Friday night but their radio station is the best place for old people to find out “what’s going on with the kids these days.” The New Afternoon Show is a daily must.

EAST VILLAGE RADIO
This station may or may not have been started by the pizza place next door and it has to be the tiniest radio station in the world. The best show on this is by our very own Gay Beach but Mark Ronson’s show is great too.

VIVA RADIO
Though notoriously difficult to navigate (why can’t you link to a specific DJ’s fucking show?) this site has plenty of great shows. Our favorite is ours but after that we like The AD Team for funny hits, Rob Low for hip hop and that t-shirt guy Max Wowch for everything else.

And the winner is… Stations that can read your fucking mind. All you do is type in a few of your favorite bands and it guesses what kind of music you’re into. Put in the GO-GOs and The Clash and it will play you a live version of “Cherry Bomb” you’ve never heard before. If it fucks up and plays Hole or some shit you just tell it “thumbs down” and it will never do that again.
Or say your parents come over and you don’t have any of their shitty music around; Type in Annie Lennox and Marvin Gaye and it will play their type of music for as long as you want. Makes as many radio stations as you have guests. It’s awesome.
