On Wednesday nights, we used to hit this little pub at the end of Solano Ave and talk shit about our clueless right-wing government.
One night, we were well into our second pint when it became clear that our weed dealer wasn’t gonna show. The dealer’s name was “Rich,” and since I wasn’t close with him, I wasn’t aware of what the other guys already knew: Rich was in a real bad way, at home on a coke bender after finding out that his girlfriend had been cheating on him steadily for the past six months.
When I asked the guys where the fuck their boy Rich was, they broke down and told me his deal.
“Fuck dude,” I said, trying to seem more concerned than pissed, “is he OK?”
“Not really, he’s takin’ it pretty hard.”
“Who’s the guy she was bangin?” I commiserated, “Does Rich know ‘em? ‘Cause that’s the worst.”
“Does he know ‘em?” replied one of my douchey friends, and the others chuckled obnoxiously as if I was somehow the idiot for not knowing the story of their jerk-off slacker drug-dealing friend.
“Yeah, he knows ‘em: It’s a Facilities guy from Rich’s office.”
A couple of the other guys looked away.
“Facilities guy,” I mused, “like a Mailroom dude?”
“No, like … a janitor?”

Now, it’s easy to understand why Daniel Carver of the KKK would have a nervous breakdown if he found out his wife was bangin’ a black guy. Daniel and his organization consider blacks to be animals — the lowest life forms on the planet besides Jews and Gays. So in the context of his worldview, it’s easy to see why Daniel Carver would be MORE upset about his wife essentially fucking a gorilla than he would be if she simply fucked another white man.

Why would a group of people so politically correct that we literally would not say the word “black” be subject to a similar reaction as someone in the KKK?

Hovering in the air at that charged, titillating moment, the guys wanted to tell me the janitor’s race, and I wanted to hear it. More specifically, these fantasies are the symptoms of a core set of perceptions of which “racism” is a byproduct. Like an unforgeable Racial Perception MRI, their secret existence measures white people’s most core, reptilian responses to black men. These are indicative of white people’s ingrained perception of black people, burnt into a nightmare fantasy — they “pop” with contrast because they are held against the tender emotions that white people hold most dear.
So as progressives, we can talk a big game about acceptance – as intellectuals, we’re forced to realize that we’ve got some despicable shit running through our neurons. Resist the urge though, to claim that we’re no better than Daniel Carver – we are better (though we are slave to some of the same core perceptions) because of our disgust of ourselves, and our desire to eliminate these perceptions in our offspring.
We’re not just reptiles measured by our involuntary responses — we’re measured by how we analyze these responses and how we act.
You can’t do anything to change your core perceptions at this late stage in the game, but as a society we can help shape our children’s perceptions, and most importantly, continue to fuck other races until we all look like Tiger Woods’ grandkids.
One day, centuries from now, we’ll see racism die. We’ll know that it’s dead by observing a George Jetson-like man who discovers that his girlfriend has been fucking a darker-skinned guy; as he vomits cocaine throat-residue into a robotic toilet and bawls, fixated on the screeching violation of his female, instead of picturing the muscular thrusts of his era’s Mike Tyson or Lysol, he’ll merely imagine the tender, geeky spasms of a futuristic Steve Urkel or Barak Obama equivalent.
