Speaking of genes, I think I was born with a “fake philanthropy” gene somewhere buried in there.

When I was about 9 I wrote a letter to the Seattle Supersonics asking them to travel 1,612 and a half kilometers to my small town in northern British Columbia to play a pick-up game on an abandoned piece of shit basketball court…..for charity. I actually got a letter back from one of their PR people saying that unfortunately they couldn’t fly an entire basketball team up to my proposed round robin tournament in a remote town that is over 2 hours away from the next nearest civilization, though he wished me luck with the charitable event. I don’t quite remember where I’d planned to dispense the money, but I think it might have been Somalia, though I might have resorted to the catch-all locale: Africa.

Then when I was 24, I had the hair-brained scheme to get an all-star cast of musicians to make fun of Bob Geldof’s “Do They Know It’s Christmas”….for charity. This one worked, sort of. And now the irrepressible amateur half-assed philanthropic gene, it’s struck again (and with David Cross, for a second time- he’s a good sport.)

On December 8th, I’m curating a night at the Knitting Factory….for charity. Marnie Stern will be there, Gavin and Beckles will be there, showcasing how best to get the shit kicked out of you. Sam, of Wasted Push-up fame will be there, doing his best representation of Kafka’s “A Hunger Artist” (or David Blaine), in a metal cage, substituting an ascetic relinquishment of nourishment for an electric kool-aid type experience. David Cross, like I said, will be there. I’ll be there (and I’m sorry for that, they made me), and comedians like Dave Hill and other surprises will be there. Free PBR will be there, and maybe you’ll be there, too.
